Energy Minister, Eng. Kumara Jayakody, during the inspection tour at the proposed and currently operating wind power plant sites in the Mannar region, stated that the plan, developed even before the government came into power aimed at harnessing the full wind power generation potential, especially in the Mannar region, and encouraging investments and the use of modern technology in this regard, will be put in to action.
During the visit, the Minister inspected the site allocated for the proposed Mullikulam 100MW Wind Farm, for which tenders have been called for and, also the Thambapawani Wind Farm, currently operating under CEB, and held discussions with its senior officers.
He also inspected the site of the 50MW Hayleys Fentons Wind Farm, which is to be constructed soon in a contiguous area of the said premises, and for which the new government has entered into an agreement to purchase electricity at the minimum rate of USD 4.65 cents per unit.
Furthermore, discussions were held with the Hon. President of the Mannar Citizens’ Committee, Rev. Fr. S. Marcus, and a group of its members regarding their requests, suggestions and the government’s future plans to develop the Mannar region.
