The Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Regulatory Council has taken steps to establish an early warning system to monitor radiation levels in the event of a nuclear accident.
This is being implemented under the assistance of International Atomic Energy Agency.
Director of the Inspection and Enforcement Division of the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Regulatory Council, Prageeth Kadadunna, stated that these systems have been installed at 05 different locations across the country, primarily near naval bases such as Kalpitiya, Mannar, Batticaloa and Trincomalee.
These systems have been developed with the ability to detect radiation that may enter Sri Lanka through natural or artificial nuclear power plant accidents in nearby countries.
