The National Workshop on “Application of Gamma Radiation Technology for Value Addition and Quality Improvement of Medical and Food Products” organized by the Sri Lanka Gamma Center with the resource contribution of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was held today (15) at the Board of Investment Auditorium in Biyagama, with the key participation of the Minister of Energy, Eng. Kumara Jayakodi.

“This national workshop provides an excellent opportunity to raise awareness on the benefits of adopting gamma irradiation technology for value addition and quality enhancement in the medical, agricultural and environmental fields among producers, industrialists, investors and especially exporters related to such fields! The advantage of using gamma irradiation technology to enhance quality and strengthen competition in local and international market will be substantial. Our government intends to expedite the integration of nuclear technology into national development priorities. The initiative taken by the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board in this regard is highly commendable”, said the Minister during the inauguration event.

Sri Lanka Gamma Centre is an ISO 13485 quality certified Multi-Purpose Gamma Irradiation Laboratory owned by Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board, and it is in operation since January 2014.

Dr. Maria Helena of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Dr. Thushara Ratnayake, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Authority, Mrs. Champa Dissanayake, Director General of the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Authority, and a number of executive officers from the policy making entities, regulatory agencies and business organizations of Sri Lanka graced the event.
