A meeting was held today (01) morning at the Ministry between the UK High Commissioner to
Sri Lanka, Mr. Andrew Patrick, and the Minister of Energy, Eng. Kumara Jayakody.
Aiming to enhance connections in the energy sector between the two countries, the discussion
focused specifically on information, plans and future initiatives related to the country’s power
sector. Attention was given to emerging trends in the power sector such as wind power and the
UK High Commissioner expressed the willingness to provide necessary assistance to the
country through international cooperation agencies as per the requirement.
Moreover, the discussions also focused on the hydropower system, which accounts for a
significant share of country’s renewable energy generation and there the Minister gratefully
highlighted that the Victoria power plant, country’s largest hydropower plant, was a result of a
grant from the UK. The Minister stated that further enhancing of the capacity of the Victoria
power plant has been given consideration in line with the original plan and that he expects the
support of the British government for this purpose.
The High Commissioner expressed that he would present these matters to his government and
offer all possible assistance to facilitate further actions in this regard.
