The construction work of Sri Lanka\u2019s pioneering 5 MW\/10.7 MWh Battery Energy Storage System Project, designed to store the electricity generated during the afternoon when solar power production is at its peak and release it to the grid between 6 pm and 10 pm when electricity demand is at its peak, was recently inspected by the Minister of Energy, Eng. Kumara Jayakody.<\/p>\n
This ongoing project, funded by a special grant of USD 11.9 million from the Republic of Korea, is expected to deliver great economic benefits by storing solar energy generated at a lower cost during the day time and releasing it to the grid during the night time when electricity demand is at its peak. Also it offers a practical solution to avoid the instability in the grid which may cause by excess solar power supply during the day time when the demand goes low.<\/p>\n
The Energy Minister has given special attention to such projects as a solution to the grid instability and other related issues reported in the recent past, and as a crucial process towards maximizing the use of solar energy; hence this inspection tour was organized accordingly.<\/p>\n
