Energy Minister Eng.Kumara Jayakody during his visit to Mannar

Each and every development project implemented by this government is aimed at ensuring the progress and prosperity of the country and its people. During a visit to the Mannar area last week (on 5th) to investigate the issues and demands of the people living in the region, particularly those arising in connection with the 50MW and 20MW wind power plants, the Minister expressed that recognizing issues and taking necessary actions to address them with a sensitive approach is the key policy of this government.

It was revealed at meetings held in several locations in this area with the participation of clergy, representatives of local community associations, political representatives of the area, and District MPs from both government party and the opposition,  that people in this area have faced a range of issues such as floods, loss of lands and reduced fish harvest due to the construction of wind power plants, and that they had to undergo various hardships caused by shortcomings that occurred in the early stages of these projects.

The Minister mentioned that, in consideration of the value of these projects initiated in response to the country’s needs and the potential of the area’s natural resources, and the legal conditions associated with these investments, the government is now compelled to act realistically in this regard. He added that the appropriate methodologies are being developed to address emerging socio-environmental or economic issues as per the special directives of the President, and further mentioned that the purpose of his visit was to hear out the people’s views, expectations and opinions on them at the grassroots level.

Community representatives appreciated the Cabinet Minister for visiting them in person and directly meeting with the people to listen to their views, saying it was a proof that this government is one that understands the attitudes and aspirations of the people. They further stated that they expect these issues will be resolved by this government, as they have placed great trust in it.

Vanni District MPs Mayilvaganam Jegatheeswaran, Kader Masthan, Thurairasa Ravikaran, political representatives of the area, representatives of community organizations, and senior officers from government institutions attended the occasion.
