The construction work of Sri Lanka’s pioneering 5 MW/10.7 MWh Battery Energy Storage System Project, designed to store the electricity generated during the afternoon when solar power production is at its peak and release it to the grid between 6 pm and 10 pm when electricity demand is at its peak, was recently inspected by the Minister of Energy, Eng. Kumara Jayakody.

This ongoing project, funded by a special grant of USD 11.9 million from the Republic of Korea, is expected to deliver great economic benefits by storing solar energy generated at a lower cost during the day time and releasing it to the grid during the night time when electricity demand is at its peak. Also it offers a practical solution to avoid the instability in the grid which may cause by excess solar power supply during the day time when the demand goes low.

The Energy Minister has given special attention to such projects as a solution to the grid instability and other related issues reported in the recent past, and as a crucial process towards maximizing the use of solar energy; hence this inspection tour was organized accordingly.

This project is expected to be completed before the end of this year.
