Norochcholai Lakvijaya Coal-fired Power Plant plays a key role in maintaining the stability of the country’s electricity supply. However, the auxiliary power supply of the condenser cooling system and boiler feed water supply system of the power plant fails during a nationwide power outage, which is a major weakness of the power plant. This causes a prolonged down time of the plant up to four to five days. This also leads to substantial financial losses.

A committee was appointed as per the directives of the Energy Minister Eng. Kumara Jayakody to find a technically solution to avoid this situation, and the committee has suggested that it would be appropriate to introduce a seamless standby auxiliary power supply for critical systems which can be implemented within a short time.

Accordingly, the proposal made by the Minister of Energy to implement a project to operate an auxiliary power supply for the condenser cooling system and boiler feed water system using the funds of the CEB was approved by the Cabinet.

Furthermore, in response to a question raised in Parliament on 21-08-2025, the Minister of Energy presented this matter as an essential step to be taken in order to maintain the stability of the national grid.
