Renewable Power Generation (Solar and Wind) Exceeds the Planned Capacity for 2025/2026/2027

The Minister of Energy stated in Parliament today (19) that, as of June 2026, 2695 MW of non-traditional renewable (solar and wind) energy capacity had been installed, significantly exceeding the target of 1848 MW capacity under the 2025-2044 Long-Term Power Generation Plan, and surpassing the target renewable electricity generation for this year. The Minister further mentioned that, in addition to the target generation for 2026 and 2027 using ground-mounted solar systems, agreements have already been signed to generate 200MW and 250 MW more capacity, respectively,

Furthermore, the Minister stated that the 46% import duty charged on BESS equipment has been removed since 15 October, and accordingly, this import duty will no longer apply to batteries imported for the currently contracted BESS Facilities with a capacity above 1MW.

The Minister provided the above information in response to questions raised by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa and MP Ravi Karunanayake, in Parliament.
