A 204 MW Power Plant Is Planned for the Kilinochchi District….
Minister of Energy Eng. Kumara Jayakody joins the inspection tour to the proposed site in Kiranchi-Veravil in the Kilinochchi District, where a 204 MW wind power plant is planned to be constructed.
Today (25), Minister of Energy, Eng. Kumara Jayakody joined a site-inspecting and fact-finding inspection tour to the proposed wind power project site in the Kiranchi-Veravil region of the Kilinochchi District, which will add 204 MW of power capacity to the national grid.
The objectives of the proposed project are to harness the wind power potential in the above region and thereby expedite development activities in the Northern region, in line with the government’s policy of maximizing the renewable energy contributions to the power supply and ensuring the achievement of the country’s energy targets.
It is planned to install 34 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 6 MW. The Minister visited most of the selected land plots to inspect them personally. It was observed that most of the land plots allocated for this purpose are in good condition to commence construction work of the project. Also measures that can be taken to redress the issues related to several land plots were also explored.
Following the inspection tour, a meeting was held at the Kilinochchi District Secretariat with the participation of officials from the project and relevant government institutions.
Speaking at the meeting the Minister stated that this project will be implemented as a national requirement and through this, it is planned to develop the infrastructure facilities required by the people living in the area. Furthermore, he mentioned that this project will be implemented with a minimal impact on the environment and on the general public, highlighting that this project will be of great importance for the Northern region, which has long been deprived of development.
Jaffna District MP Karunanathan Ilankumaran, Kilinochchi District Secretary S. Muralitharan, Chairman of the Sustainable Energy Authority Prof. Wijendra Bandara, Director General of the Sustainable Energy Authority Harsha Wickramasinghe and many government officials participated in this event.
