Approval Granted for the Award of the Tender for the Establishment of 160MW/640 MWh, Standalone Battery Energy Storage System!
The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the award of the above tender after considering the Cabinet Memorandum submitted by the Minister of Energy, Eng. Kumara Jayakody, regarding the establishment of Battery Energy storage System with energy shifting ability, while addressing one of the key challenges in maximizing the integration of high levels of solar energy into the country’s national grid.
Accordingly, in line with the new government’s program for the establishment of Standalone Battery Energy Storage Systems with a capacity of 10MW/40 MWh (totaling 160 MW/640 MWh) at 16 grid substations across the country, tenders were invited on 30.07.2025 and the tender opening date was 16.09.2025. Subsequently, the tender period was extended to 14.10.2025 and a total no. of 153 tenders were received for the 16 designated grid substations.
Accordingly, this Cabinet approval has been granted in accordance with the recommendations submitted by the Independent Tender Committees, considering the technical and other specifications applicable to each grid substation.
Following the completion of the required procurement process, as per the decision taken at the Cabinet meeting held on 28.04.2025 to implement this under the Build Own and Operate (BOO) Basis,this approval was granted yesterday (02.01.2026)
